The Ibn Rushd Fund Demands Democratic Change for Egypt

The Ibn Rushd Fund is watching the current events in Egypt with both great interest and great anxiety. We pay tribute to the Egyptian People for their courage to demand their right as the true souvereign of the state despite great opposition and massive violence from the Mubarak government. Together, fearless citizens of all social classes peacefully demand the right of the people to self-determination and to freely elect their own government.

It has been thirty years now that Hosni Mubarak has been ruling, and he has long ago turned his government into a regime that mercilessly rules the Egyptian people. Injustice, poverty and corruption are omnipresent, the young generation has no prospect of adequately paid work nor of a self-determined future. In order enable a change into a democratic state meriting this name, Mubarak’s resignation is indispensable. The Egyptian people rightfully insist on this demand, and their need for change is so great that they have lost all fear and counter greatest political and military violence, even at the cost of over a hundred civilians killed by state forces, thousands of injured and hundreds of missing people.

The Ibn Rushd Fund expresses its deepest sympathy to the families of those who lost their lives in the fight for a democratic and just future for the Egyptian people.

We call on the influential democratic nations of the world, especially the European Union and the United States of America, to end their support for the totalitarian and dictatorial regime in Egypt and to use their best endeavors to support the change to a true and real democracy.
