Murder of July14th, 1958 Revolution

Bahjat Abbas
2011 / 2 / 2

When the great 14th July revolution erupted,
People danced and sang.
All intention was undertaken
To save the dear homeland from any injustice.
O’ home protectors move briskly
As vehement lions!
The old era was buried
And went to hell.
The paradise opened its door,
And bliss overflows.
Enjoy the bright future.
Down with the old establishment,
And breathe the fragrance of freedom.
All shall be behind the leader, it is Abdul Karim*,
Who crushed the pillars of the devil.
Who ignited the flame in the darkness.
Thus the walls of Moscow within arm’s reach,
And the paradise with fresh fruit
Appeared to the nation’s eyes.

Nasser’s hopes got a blow.
He started to assemble armies
And call on the Arabs: Come on!
Gather all cadres!

The union between Egypt and Iraq is concluded.
But the grief obstacle, O’ best comrades, is Kassem
And the communists, the trouble makers!
Eliminate anyone who prevents its realization,
And I will furnish you with money and power and fame.
Kassem divided the Iraqi nations,
So he is guilty,
And the communists stood, as lions, against unity!

His trumpets, the trumpets of Sout Al Arab**, released
The deadly poison with inferior speech,
And hatred spread like wildfire.
Thus Iraqi people divided into two main factions:
One tries to build a system;
Its basis is Kassem and 14th July revolution,
And antagonizes the followers of
Nasser and the unification of the capitals.
Assembled from the communists party,
The minority, the Kurds and the mass proletarians,
In the hope of the lush meadow and the scent of jasmine.
But the matter was muddled between truth and doubt,
Thus they were bewildered in darkness,
Looking for stars.
At the start it dominated the country with a tight grip,
An inflexible determination,
And let all opposed to it taste bitterness.
Terror was embedded in the comrades’ clothes.
But the singular leader tightened the robe
Intending to curb the whim of revolutionaries,
Thus he smashed the fortified wall,
That defends him from enemies’ attack,
Forgetting, if not they, he never can be in this lair.

The other faction is the Ba’ath, surrounded
By throngs of hatred;
Some of which are deceived by resurrection of Arabs,
Some are rich and anxious,
Some are ambitious dreamers of high positions
And some are orphans, the orphans of the elite.

Then a small group was calling on army to step down,
Hand over the keys of leadership
To those who understand the meaning of sovereignty,
And the nation’s reward will be prestige and happiness.
Nobody listened nor did it touch a heart.
Thus it went uphill begging for a flat area.

They raised Kassem to the rank of god!
O’ What a big mistake!
What a fiddler’s carelessness!
Thus he started to mix up with events and was confused,
And shelter the enemies, who set up a thousand and one traps,
To take reign from an arrogant and unaware leader.
But the leader was not aware of the gravity,
Thus he believed he was the one and only,
There were no peers, no equals,
And he had the people! a support for the leader,
The people, a shield protecting him,
If a villain wants to aim at him,
And the people are a sword, whose hits are not repulsed.
But the party he fears is a deep-rooted one,
And it is that that was the best friend and companion to him.
If he took its cadres to jail and for banishment and torture,
He could weaken the party,
So it could not grab power forcibly from him,
And so he signalled to his enemies to embrace him,
With loyalty and love,
So the reign for the leader would be solidified.
He was deluded, he treated the enemies as companions.

But we wove a spider web,
And we went deep in the realm’s cells,
And we removed everyone we fear,
In quietness and silence.
And we shouted for the dear homeland’s life and the prestige of greatness,
And we pretended we were with the best leader,
And the just shall rise despite foreign agents.

When our number stood strong in the crises,
And the singular leader was happy with the tumults;
Banishing the loyal, bringing near every clever opponent,
Then when he fought all Kurds in the north of homelands,
He imprisoned comrades under different sorts of suspicion.
The matter was converted against him
After the bridle was cut.
We took advantage, it was the opportunity of lifetime and
Wedding ceremony of the era.
And so we travelled by American trains speeding
Into the heart of darkness.
Then - a massacre,
Blood flowed as a river in the desert,
Whereas the rule was (AFTARA).***

The leader was killed for no guilt
But the desire to make people happy.
I witness, if he would remain as a leader,
And every party abandoned its ways of hypocrisy,
And became deaf to all dissonance and falsifications,
And if every chief would distance himself from tribalism,
Enfolding his hollow dreams,
And seeking the guidance of rational thought,
And starting to unite in good faith,
This nation would live in paradise and harmony.

He was a patriot indeed, impartial and proud,
He had no faith in parties to rule a tribal nation.
But the biggest mistake and the great problem,
He did not distinguish enemies from friends,
Deluded they would not forget his favour,
Thus he would stay as a noble unique leader.
But they harboured treachery
Against him till his weary defeat.
He was warned many times but in vain,
He was stubborn, inflexible, lacking right decision,
Never he was a politician and did not accept solutions.

The Pharaoh of Egypt danced and congratulated Aref,****
That naive inexperienced who reeks
Of seething hatred.
Sectarian he was, talking nothing but nonsense.

The great union was not concluded!
And camels were not sacrificed.
Aref burned by conspiracy of the Superiors.
Thereafter Zion has rolled in dust
The forces of Nasser, the arrogant.
It smashed his great pride,
Scorned before his inferiors,
What did Egypt gain thereafter as glory?
Nothing but deprivation and poverty,
And the poor slept
Among the graves.
