It Takes Religion for Good People to Do Evil Things

Somebody, I don’t recall who, said, “Good people do good things, and evil people do evil things. It takes religion for good people to do evil things.”

If we study history we find instances of events that confirmed this saying.

In the Middle Ages the Catholic church instituted the “Inquisition”, which condemned apostates and people who were accused of doing magic, to the most horrific method of punishment, I.e. “Incineration”.

The Moslems are commanded by their religion to kill apostates. Of course I know the majority of Moslems do not adhere to this command.

Now the members of the court of Inquisition may not have all been evil people, nor people like Bin Laden or El-Zawahiri can be considered to be criminals.

The peculiarity of the Catholic faith is duality of the religious commandments. There are the commands that are enshrined in the holy book, which do not enforce injurious acts, and there are the commands instituted by the Church, which do not necessarily concur with those of the holy book.

Religious zeal, regardless which religion it is, compels good people to hate and discriminate against people of other religions. They are otherwise all good and law abiding citizens. This is what is happening in the Middle East nowadays, and happened in Europe in the Middle Age. However the sad thing to note is that the people in the Middle East are living in the twenty first century and behaving according to precepts of the sixth century. The only countries of which the constitution includes the religion of the country are those of the Middle East.
