A Penny-worth of Paradise

(an amusing short story)

By : Freeyad Ibrahim

A wealthy and grasping retired merchant was among the congregation who attended the sermon given by a youthful vicar who preached on charity with eloquence . The vicar urged the rich to give to the poor so that they might escape the torments of Hell, which he depicted in hideous terms, and attain Paradise, which he made to sound altogether delightful . The wealthy merchant who had made a fortune in the cloth-trade but had never been known to give to the poor seemed to be moved by the preach . After this sermon , it was observed, he handed on Sundays a single coin to the old-beggar women who clustered outside the Cathedral door . There were six of them to share it .
Noting the event the vicar who happened to be passing there at that moment smiled and said: " He is buying a penny-worth of paradise."
