The Ticket

There are many ways to do it and I had been thinking of finding the most appropriate until a colleague suggested: stop paying into the pension scheme, save the money and buy a ticket. Although the idea appealed to me I dismissed it as trivial. Then all of a sudden it made itself felt most powerfully and took possession of me. Unfortunately, flight tickets with no given destination are rare, very expensive and have to be ordered in advance. So I had no choice but wait some time. You wouldn’t believe it but it was on a Sunday two weeks later when I found an old rumpled envelope in my letterbox. There was no trace of any sender’s name so I hastily opened it and found the ticket inside. The two lines which were enclosed read: Single ticket not valid for domestic or international flights. Please note the departure place and time. I followed the instructions carefully and when I arrived there, there were only few people waiting for me.
