Read in the name of God
Poem by : Freeyad Ibrahim
***************
He said he cannot read
And he burst into sweat
Once more the voice ordered him:
Read
And he gripped at his clothes,
By the throat.
Then he repeated quivering,
Like a stork:
I am illiterate,
I can’t read.
Who are you?
An emissary angel,
From the Lord of Daybreak.
He got out of breath
The angel pressed tightly
Round his neck
And once again:
Read
I don’t know how to read my lord angel.
Read…read…read
In the name of your Lord who created,
Created man from a clot of blood.
Pardon, what do you say?
What alaq?
What falaq?
What are you talking about you malak?
What alaq?
What shalaq?
I understand nothing
Fear kills me oh angel!
He was alone in the cave.
He had almost passed away .
You have to read.
Verb in its definitive order form
By the Lord of the dusk and the twilight.
And from that moment on,
And we hear his followers
Give orders
And all their verbs are in the form of definitive order
Arousing terror and anxiety:
Read
Shoot
Strike
Stone
Slaughter
Kill
Burn
Plunder
Shed
Destroy

Rape
Cut
Assault
Fight
Fright
Butcher
Pray
Fast
Go on pilgrimage
Cleanse
Purify
Drown
Cast terror into their hearts
Until terror had turned into a clinging substance
Clinging like hemoglobin to the blood,
to the Middle East blood
By the Lord of the Daybreak,
And the twilight.
And he went back to his household,
And ordered his spouse vigorously and excitedly
Cover me ..cover me
And from that time on
The verb prevails in its ordering form
And ‘must’
And ‘shoud be’
And ‘either…or…’
Either you resign´-or-we slay you
Or you drown
And their obliging orders
Are issued without the use of ‘sorry, excuse me’ and without preliminaries
And the high ranked is the flatterer.
No wonder.
That is because
Their headman
Has passed
All his dreams and nightmares
To his disciples and followers
and all his orders weaved
To the people
That they are revelations from the Heaven
In order to be believed
