New research published in Nature Reviews Urology indicates evidence that Covid-19 has effects on the genitourinary system, which should be considered when treating Covid-19.
Most patients with severe Covid-19 have symptoms related to pneumonia, but some patients may experience serious urinary tract complications, including acute kidney injury (AKI), which requires continuous kidney treatment.

The male reproductive system is particularly vulnerable to Covid-19 infection. This relates to the fundamental changes in sexual hormones observed in some patients with Covid-19. This may lead to impaired testicular -function- (impaired gonads).
  Covid-19 mechanism and reproductive system
It is already known that some viruses such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, mumps, Epstein Barr and papillomas can cause viral orchitis, a condition in which oneŽ-or-both testicles are inflamed. This condition may lead to male infertility and testicular tumors.
In the case of coronavirus, autopsies performed on six patients who died due to SARS showed the virus that caused the outbreak in 2003 of viral orchitis.
The researchers concluded that the new coronavirus might have the same effect. They also point to the results of a previous study where patients with Covid-19 showed a significant decrease in testosterone levels compared to their healthy counterparts. According to them, this may be a sign of poor reproductive health.

The researchers stressed that those who are predisposed to develop kidney disease are more at risk of developing complications of Covid-19, and when they develop the disease, health professionals should monitor their health. In the event that young adults develop Covid-19 who wish to have children in the future, it is suggested that they have fertility counseling at a later time to ensure that there is no impairment of the gonads.
