Tears of Baghdad – A ballad

This ballad was written originally in Arabic as a poem with rhymes, then translated to English and German. It deals with the events happened in Iraq during the second half of twentieth century, particularly the July 14th revolution, which destroyed the monarchy and converted Iraq first time to a republic, and with the absurd cascade of wars that the former regime has ignited and engaged in, until Iraq has fallen under occupation and entered a dark tunnel, the end of which is difficult to predict.
These wars caused death of about 2 million Iraqis and led to the destruction of the infrastructure of the country and affected the people psychologically.
This ballad examines in some detail the situation in Iraq before and during the Ba’ath reign led by a tyrannical dictator that changed the perception of this country. The ballad is written with the intent of a first person narrative through Saddam’s encounters in different circumstances.
Since the occupation, which is supposed to be liberation from a dictatorial despot, was a disappointment, other short poems, Rubayyats, were written last year as a result of unjust, terror and death squads. These poems were translated to English and German too and were associated with the ballad in one book.
