We stand aloof from the stoning of women in Iraq & Kurdistan!

Doa, a 17 year old girl, was stoned to death in her hometown Bashiqua, Kurdistan in Iraq. As from a family of Yazidi faith Doa’s crime was to fall in love with a young Muslim Arab man. Doa had moved to her boyfriend’s house as they planned to get married. Her own family tricked her home again by giving Doa their blessing for her wedding with her boyfriend. It was a lie! The 7th of April 2007 some Yazidi men came and snatched Doa from her house and stoned her to death in public in the town of Bashiqua. A lot of men participated in the stoning with both small and large stones while shouting helped by applauding crowd. They did not stop until Doa was dead. No authorities intervened and stopped this barbaric crime against a 17 year old girl whose only crime was to fall in love.

The stoning of Doa has to be seen as a continuation of violence and killing of women in a patriarchal Kurdistan. The government of Kurdistan has failed to enforce laws against criminals to bring them to justice and punishment and hereby protect the women. Therefore, the government has a responsibility for the ongoing and frequent violent acts committed against women like stoning to death as was in the case for Doa.

We call on women’s organizations in Denmark and other countries to disassociate themselves from and condemn the stoning of Doa and at the same request the government of Kurdistan to make the necessary legal changes to prosecute the criminals and prevent killings and oppression of women.

We support all the organizations and people in- and outside Iraq, who has condemned and disassociated themselves from the barbaric crime on women like 17 year old Doa.
