Debts and Demands
Often I find myself at a market meeting other people’s demands. Demands are everywhere from people near and far away. They have always placed great demands on me which I am supposed to meet on a regular basis. If I failed, all I have done so far would be forgotten as if nothing has ever happened. But they are very exacting and their demands have no end. They say: we raised you. You are deeply in our debt. So I hurry to the market in the early morning and make the necessary arrangements for the payment of instalments. Me, no I am not entitled to anything. On the market where I work the demands don’t follow any economic principle because the more demands I meet the faster they grow.

Some warn me by saying this is not trade but exploitation and it leads to a kind of established or customary right. You are not in debt forever. You were not brought into the world as a favour but for their own pleasure. So I start freeing myself from the chains of all types of demands. I say demands are expectations closely related to evaluation. My imagination wanders to a market free place where nobody can sell or buy and appraisal is impossible. I feel free and enjoy peace of mind. I am not apprehensive or concerned about any evaluation to behave in a socially desirable way. No more demands which make me tired or worried. My shoulders don’t slouch any more. Every muscle in me is relaxed. Yes, I am speaking about my new place. There is neither a bank nor a market here.

Unfortunately one day somebody started opening a bank and soon after a market was opened. I was forced to go on the market and supply demands again. Another day I got a letter from the new bank reminding me not only of the monthly instalments I had to pay but also the interest due. Finally I was paid back with interest.
