Does Evil Exist?

A friend of mine e-mailed me the following the story:

One day a professor of a university decided to defy his pupils. He asked:
“Did God create everything that exists?”
A student answered bravely, “Yes, he did”
“Everything?” asked the teacher
“Yes, everything”, was the answer of the student.
“In this case, God also created evil, correct?” To that the student had no answer and remained silent.
The teacher was delighted at the opportunity to prove one more time that faith was only a myth.
Suddenly another student raised his hand and asked, “May I?”
“Of course” was the answer.
“Does cold exist?” Asked the student.
“Of course” answered the teacher.
“Actually, sir cold does not exist. According to studies in Physics, cold is the total and complete absence of heat. And an object can only be studied if it has and transmits energy. And it is the heat of an object that transmits its energy. Without that objects are inert and incapable to react. But cold does not exist, we created the term to explain the lack of heat”.
“And darkness?” continued the student.
“It exists”, replied the teacher.
“Again, you are wrong sir. Darkness is the complete absence of light. Darkness is the term we created to explain the total absence of light”.
And finally the student asked, “And evil, sir, does evil exist? God did not create evil. Evil is the absence of God in people’s hearts. It is the absence of love, honesty and faith. Like heat and light their absence lead to evil”.
It was the turn of the teacher to be silent. The name of that student was Albert Einstein. (End of e-mail).

I do not presume to be equal to the task of arguing with a giant like Albert Einstein. Oddly enough the teacher showed his complete stupidity by confirming the existence of cold and darkness. Every educated person knows they are complete negations. However I beg to disagree with Einstein when he says, like cold and darkness, evil does not exist.
When the Israelis broke into the walls of Jericho and eliminated everybody including suckling babes it was in compliance with God’s command. (The Old Testament- The Book of Joshua – Chapter 6 – Verse 21). When the Spaniards invaded South America they forced the inhabitants to convert to Christianity or else. They were seving God’s cause. (John Crow – The Epic of Latin America – Chapter 12 , the Church as Inquisitor and Moral Censor). When the terrorists exploded the Twin Towers in New York City murdering thousands of innocent people they did it according to God’s edicts. I can relate innumerable similar evil acts committed in God’s name. These acts are concrete actual acts and not negations like coldness and darkness. If Einstein says they are due to the absence of God, love and mercy in the hearts of the people who committed these acts that is a matter of conviction. The people concerned believe otherwise.
