He asked me: Are you a Muslim?
I said: I was born into a Muslim family.
He asked more pertinently and impatiently: What can I do for you now?
Well I said I want to leave. I want to delete the line which says: Religion: “Muslim” from my passport. He grew angry and said: look once you decide to belong to Islam you can’t simply leave later.
I said: look I became a Muslim not because I wanted to. My parents gave it to me without even asking me whether I agreed or not.
He said: How can they ask you when were just born. Besides you must take the same religion of your family. This is tradition wherever you go.
I said: Well, I mean they should have waited until I was 18 or at least asked me when I was 18 whether I wanted to stay a Muslim or not. You know I hate when something so vital, which is supposed to be part of my identity, be imposed on me. But now I hope I have the freedom to choose what I want or delete the line completely from my passport. I am not saying I want to be a Jew or a Christian or even a Buddhist.
He said you need a religion. Islam will be your religion forever.
I said: I am sorry but I disagree I think religion is a private matter and none of your business. I found my own private religion. I will keep it to myself and will never try to make other people believe in what I believe by force like you.

He said: Go away, no, Islam doesn’t accept when people leave. You pay for it with your life or your hair will be shaven bald in humility, you will be pilloried on a donkey. People will throw yoghurt on your bald head while being ridden around the city.

I asked: but why it is so easy to become a Muslim? You just need to say two sentences. Not more.
Does this means becoming a Muslim is like a newspaper, a magazine, or an online service subscription? It is easy to become a member but risk your neck when you want to end the subscription. The only difference is services have a compulsory prescription period of two years. Is Islam a life subscription?
