Union of Palestinian Women s Committees(UPWC):
Palestinian women s struggle continues!

The Union of Palestinian Women s Committees issued a statement marking International Women s Day on March 8, 2009, stating that the success of the programs of the women s movement is linked to the commitment to democratic foundations for this movement, and the work exerted to develop programs to reflect the issues and concerns of Palestinian women.
The statement continued to affirm that the struggle of Palestinian women is part and parcel of the national and democratic struggle of the Palestinian people seeking liberation of our land and our people, and any programs or initiatives that attempt to isolate the women s movement from the popular struggle will not lead to any real achievements, especially for women.

The statement continued, "We, on this International Women s Day, salute all of our fellow Palestinian women and our people in their steadfastness in the face of the occupation that has shown its willingness to use any weaponry and war machine against our people and commits brutal crimes against us on a daily basis. We will continue to exercise our rights and we call upon the Palestinian leadership to unite for the inalienable national rights of our people through the success of the Palestinian national dialogue, and the rebuilding of the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, ridding it of corruption and disease and restoring it as a reference and a unified command for all of our people at home and abroad."

The Union said in its statement that "it salutes today the Palestinian women who opened a new page of the glory of the daughters and sons of the Palestinian people in their resistance and steadfastness against the horrific crimes of the occupation army and its use of internationally banned weapons in the Gaza Strip, and the steadfastness of the resistance to the enemy s campaign of transfer in Jerusalem and challenging its plans of settlements and land confiscation in the West Bank. These are new and trying battles, but they are part and parcel of the process of this conflict and the long term fight to achieve our national rights of return, and self-determination, and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital."

The UPWC said that "today, in this time, we hold our heads high and raise our voices to demand our rights and the rights of our people. We stand in tribute to the martyrs, the men, women and children and we salute the courage of every mother and family member of the martyrs, the wounded and the injured, and all who stand against the threatened demolition of homes in Jerusalem, all those who stand in front of bulldozers confiscating land and uprooting trees, and we greet and salute all of the men and women prisoners."

The statement continued by saying, "Women of Palestine have, from the first moment, upheld our national duty and confronted every social and economic obstacle that attempted to prevent women from carrying out our role in the national struggle, increasing our strength in the midst of confrontation, through daily work, which gives us the strength and courage to develop our situation as women in Palestinian society. This means furthering efforts to develop our pluralistic society free from all forms of discrimination against women. On this path, we must unite as women and strengthen our movement so that we can progress strongly and steadily for deep and permanent achievements to secure women s rights and prevent economic and social exploitation. Palestine will always be a nation of freedom without discrimination or distinction based on sex, as stated in our Declaration of Independence."

The statement concluded, "On this International Women s Day, coming after the horrible massacre in the Gaza Strip, we extend our mutual solidarity and gratitude to all who have stood by our people, including the progressive forces of the world who have traveled to our land and stood in support of our rights, and we call to raise the level of global solidarity in the face of all forms of colonialism and exploitation."
