Father, when we will get our new home?

Through the window that was looking at the camp’s garden he was looking at his lost future in the dark sky, he remembers the day when he signed the contract to sell the house and how he received the money with a cold soul; selling the house made him sad.

The longing feeling stayed within him, but the echo of his children’s shouting while the Aigia sea was seeking its victims among the fishermen’s boats who are no longer fishing but hunting human’s as gaining money from this trade is easier and better than wasting time on fish and in the fish market and his hopes for a better life for his children takes away his attention from the longing pain.

The sardonic smile painted his tired face when he remembered the beautiful landscape in Greece; however, his face started stressing when the question from his little daughter while they were hiding in a sealed wagon towards France came back to his mind: Father when we will arrive to our new home?

Now, he is sitting behind a window that looks at the camp’s garden which is located about 30 km far from Copenhagen, he just remembers that he has changed the calendar seven or eight times in this room; yes, he has spent seven or eight years of his life in this room. Every morning he looked at his children going to school in a hope that he will receive a letter from the immigration authorities that notifies him about the acceptance on his file, so he can tell his children that they are accepted in the new country.

He kept looking at his children going to school daily, but the letter did not arrive, all he got were notes reminding him about his appointment with the psychologist or a letter from the bank tells him that his monthly money is ready or a notification from the police asks him to go and sign his presence.

The waiting prolonged, the children grew up and the mirror that was hanging on the wall kept telling him that he got old.

One day the postman arrived and as usual he dropped the envelopes through the opening in the door, he collected them and started reading the senders, one from the bank, one from the hospital, one from the school, and one from the immigration board! Ah, he picked it up again and fastened in opening the letter just to get to what he was waiting for all the past years. Swiftly, he remembered the day when he gave up his house, the day when he said good buy to his mother at her door, the voice of his children in an abject darkness in agia sea, he remembered the smugglers at the Frankfurt train station and how they convinced him to come to Denmark because it was suppose to be the only country accepts Iraqi refugees.

With all this coming through his tiered mind, he started reading the letter:

The immigration Board
File No: 963370

Dear Mr. Salim,

We would like to inform you that the Danish government has decided to review all the cases at the refugee board that are related to Iraqi refugee claimants.

The government has come to the conclusion that there are not founded reasons for you to stay at the refugee camp as the political situation in Iraq is noticeably improving; therefore, there is no hope for you to be recognized as a refugee in Denmark. Moreover, based on the above conclusion the Danish government can not justify your being in Denmark anymore.
However the Danish government has signed Geneva pact; thus we cannot forcefully deport you back to your motherland; therefore, we as the immigration board are authorized to propose two options as it is below:

1- Willingly traveling back to Iraq through the International Organization such as IOM, and you will also receive an amount of money at the Copenhagen airport before your departure. Furthermore, we also work on providing you with another amount of money after you arrive to your country and this is as a help to start a business for a new life. The cost of the tickets will be paid by us and we will make that you can take your belonging with you.
2- Staying at the camp in Denmark but without receiving any monthly money from the immigration board as you currently do, not allowed to work, your children has to go to the school at the camp, receiving food three times a day and you will also receive necessary cloths every three months.

You can think about these two option and you have to make your decision in 38 hours. We have attached a form to this letter in case if you choose the first option then fill the form and returned to the office at the comp to list your name in the A.V.R. list and we will start the arrangement for your trip. Otherwise, you have to inform the refugee office at the camp in 48 hours from receiving this letter about your decision of preferring the second option.

Sincere,
Hemming Crone Lars

After he finished reading the letter, he started hearing the echo of his daughter’s voice asking him: “father where our new home is, where our new home, new home, new home, home is.
