Outlook on the Israeli- Egyptian 40 years of peace
Forty years have passed since Israel and Egypt signed their peace treaty in Mars 1979.The treaty was one of the most controversial political event of the twentieth century, some considered it as treachery and some as an act of great bravery.today we might be able to see what it really was.
Sadat peace initiative was based on pure political calculation, realizing that he would not be able to get back his land by force, with his need to overcome his internal problems and his desire to legitimize his rule and practically fill Nasser place, he started sending signs to the old enemy, and the old enemy in turn, Menachem Begin by then, calculated that neutralizing the biggest Arabic power deserves consideration and responded, and with the presence of a peaceful democratic leader in Washington, president Jimmy Carter, the peace process started soon, but once it started, and beyond all expectations, it created a great momentum of peace in the region.
Sadat was assassinated soon after the treaty but peace momentum continued with his successor Hosny Mubarak and peoples ,not only governments, got closer day after day, then the Palestinian authority joined in 1993 in Oslo peace agreement, and in 1994 Jordan joined in Wadi Araba peace agreement, and even after the shocking assassination of the labor party leader Yitzhaq Rabin in 1995, his colleague ,Ehud barak, supported by the democratic president Bill Clinton, continued the fight for peace until camp david 2 in 2000 where he offered most of the west bank and Jerusalem divided between Israeli and Palestinians and the refugee problem to be put off to another separate context of negotiations, which President Arafat rejected and insisted that the refugee problem must be included in the deal, causing unexpected dramatic change in the political climate, the Israeli leftist lost control and the rightist came to power, in the same way Hamas came to power in Gaza later, and the whole peace context collapsed.Peace of peoples disappeared, warm official peace between Egypt, Israel and Jordan turned to cold, Palestinians Israeli hostility resumed and escalated and the whole Middle East deteriorated into a state of war.Today we can see that Israeli peace party was the real hero behind the scene, and the biggest loser too, and the controversial event itself not as treachery´-or-bravery, but as one of the biggest missed opportunities in the history of the Middle East.
