Viagra / Nelson Mandela, and the-limit-s of peaceful resistance
Najeh Shahin
Nelson Mandela is a leader who has won an unmatched consensus from the entire world s political class. I remember him a long time ago dancing and talking about taking Viagra which most of the people of his nation cannot afford to purchase. This had come in the context of his marriage to the widow of revolutionary leader "martyr" Samora Machel.
The late Castro was once offered to shave his "historic" beard using Gillette s blades for a large sum of money, but he refused. Did Mandela receive any money,´-or-did he volunteer to serve Pfizer s interests for free?
South African President Jacub Zuma successor of Mandela was sacked for corruption. Is there a surprise? Does the man differ from his predecessor and example N. Mandela to the extent of contradiction? Had not the political compromise in S. Africa involved some political / economic bribe?
What have the white people been subjected to because of the “demise” of racial discrimination? Have they lost their privileges as members of the bourgeois class / race that controls the joints of economic life?
We believe that they have given up only the literal hold on political posts while retaining the power to "appoint" those who win the non-racial "democratic" elections. Their situation is similar to that of the Silicon Valley patrons, arms laureates, oil and speculators in the United States, like Bill Gates and George Soros: They do not run for the elections but they decide who wins.
The South Africa’s pattern is dangerous for two reasons, one is related to South Africa itself, and the second concerns all resistant movements worldwide.
First, the illusion that the suffering of the blacks in that unhappy country had ended with the appointment of a "black mayor" for the administration of population affairs, in the words of my only Marxist professor at the University of Pennsylvania Adolph Reed. Exploitation has become much easier and resistance is much weaker. This is similar to the victory of Barack Obama: the White House had been dwelled by someone who "violates" all the common elements of hegemony in America. Black, Muslim roots ... etc There can never be better than that. This made it easy for Obama to do as he pleases without any considerable opposition. Compare with the viral movement against the “wasp” Donald Trump, who allows for considerable opposition domestically and externally.
On the global level, South Africa’s example had launched a vicious rumor that revolutionary movements could achieve national liberation and independence through peaceful means and methods of boycotts. There are two fallacies here: first no serious deep change had taken place in South Africa. Second, the struggle in South Africa is a form of social / class conflict linked to ethnic / political discrimination, which has never been a type of national conflict. In this sense, this conflict resembles conflict in the context of the civil rights movement in the United States.
In Palestine, the conflict between Zionism and the Palestinian Arab people is similar to the conflict between the whites and the native inhabitants of the country (the so-called red Indians). Hence, in our case, it is expected to repeat the American model of cleansing and annihilating of the original people, and thus the success of the white Zionist in extracting the whole land,´-or-to replicate the model of Algeria by liberating the homeland and the departure of most white settlers to their homelands.
There is no space in the calculation of a South Africa-like settlement: the similarity in racial practice between the apartheid regime in South Africa and the Zionist entity does not mean that the project is essentially identical. We may recall that all colonial states practiced racial discrimination, but were intended only in a few cases such as ours to purge´-or-exterminate the people of the country.
We imagine that the placing of a huge statue of Nelson Mandela in the Tira neighborhood (do we say the bourgeois?) In Ramallah had intended at spreading a symbolic political significance that has no place in our Palestinian context.
If a smaller statue of Guevara, Chavez, Wadi Haddad, Yehia Ayyash, Fathi Shikaki,´-or-Hassan Nasrallah ... was put in place, would the "Israeli defense Army” be one hour late to break into Ramallah and blow up the "incitement to terrorism" monument?
