A COPY OF MY FEATURES
Poem by: Mahmoud Said Kawash

Wow!!
A woman, melted madly by love, lived inside me
Her silence added a tinge of grief to her nostalgia
She settled in my features and turned into a city of nymphs
She turned into terrains of homeland and became a copy of me
She dwelled in my memory and flew among the drops of hope
That was why I inhabited her in the heedlessness of time
She ignited inside me like a fireplace whose fire didn’t go out
And its ashes didn’t rest until my body became a heavy burden to her
I couldn’t afford to live in it´-or-find a replacement for it
So, thousands of moments ago, the evening clouds gathered
And told me that I should uncover the unknown mystery
From over the embers which turned into night without day
Yes, that night was mine, not any other’s night
I eagerly wrote line after line to complete the story
I angrily broke the disappointments of those promises
I hopefully drew a dream in which I embodied the good roses
I called out to the stars of hope and my soul soared over the gardens of bliss
The stars turned into pearls of light reflecting on my face
The features of love turned into migratory birds
The shores of your eyes turned into ports of a woman bisected by absence
The longing of my fleeing fingers to the sky, was in harmony with your perfume
Lurking with a supplication that dwelled in the overcast clouds in the sky
Could the space of your eyes allow me to borrow a cloud, that might take me to the warmth of your heart?
Could you cover me with the dew of your blossoms and abundant rain?
Could you? Is it possible to cover me?
