On the Occasion of International Women’s Day..Al Dameer Calls Upon the International community to Ensure Palestinian Women’s Enjoyment of all their Rights

8/3/2009

On 8 March, the world celebrates International Women’s Day. Al Dameer Association for Human Rights presents its compliments to the Palestinian women in this day, which is one of the most distinguished days that was specialized to support the role of woman in communities and to support their struggle for equality and against all forms of discrimination.
The 8th of March comes this year upon Palestinian women as they face very difficult and harsh circumstances due to human rights violations and war crimes perpetrated by Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) against them. The latest form of violence by IOF was the Cast Lead Operation against the Gaza Strip, two months ago. During this military operation, more than 100 Palestinian women were killed.

Furthermore, Palestinian women have been impacted by the siege imposed by IOF against the Gaza Strip. In this context, the suffering of Palestinian women continued in the midst of International silence and without taking any steps to end their suffering stemming from IOF policies and practices.
On this occasion , Al Dameer reminds the world , despite the existence of the conventions, which stresses on the protection of women and in particular the rules of Additional Protocol I of 1977, which include the principle of special protection for women during armed conflict in the occupied territories, the Palestinian women have faced gross violations by the IOF. In this context, hundreds of Palestinian Women have been subjected to beatings and arrests, in addition to, killing and physical liquidation by the IOF. Also, dozens of Palestinian mothers were prohibited from visiting their relatives in the Israeli prisons for security reasons as the Israeli authorities claim or because of the suspension of the visits program.

Al Dameer also, reminds that dozens of Palestinian women have been denied access to medical treatment outside the Gaza Strip. Moreover, hundreds of sick women who need medical treatment abroad cannot access to hospitals outside the Gaza Strip as the IOF obstructed their passage through military checkpoints and border crossings.

Palestinian women still face exceptional circumstances and multiple forms of violations and physical violence. Additionally, their right to life has been violated through killing for “protection of family honor.”

Finally, Al Dameer Association for Human Rights assures its support to the Palestinian women and highly appreciates their struggle to participate in the process of development and construction of society. There fore, Al Dameer calls for the following:

1- It calls upon the international community to immediately intervene to stop crimes and violations of human rights by IOF, which have had disastrous impacts on Palestinian women and calls for lifting the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and exert pressure on Israel to release all the Palestinian women prisoners in the Israeli Prisons.

2- It calls on the Palestinian National Authority PNA to protect women from all forms of violence in the Palestinian society.
