كثرة الضرب
أصابته بالدوار!

Or in the outside?
He does not know.
Too much beating
Inflicted him with vertigo!

باب الكوخ
يتفرج بكل راحة.
مسكين باب القصر
تحجب المناظر عن عينيه، دائما،
زحمة الحراس!
The cottage door
Watches in all comfort.
Poor is the mansion door,
The scenery always obscures from his eyesight
The Guards’ throng!

«يعمل عملنا
ويحمل اسمنا
لكنه يبدو مخنثا مثل نافذة.»
هكذا تتحدث الأبواب الخشبية
عن الباب الزجاجي!

And bears our name
But he looks androgynous like a window.”
That s what the wooden doors say
About the glass door!

لم تنسه المدينة أصله.
ظل، مثلما كان في الغابة،
ينام واقفا!
The city did not make him forget his root
He kept, as it was in the forest,
Taking his sleep standing erect

النائم على قارعة الطريق..
عرف الان،
الان فقط،
نعمة أن يكون له وطن،
حتى لو كان
ثقبا في باب!

The key
Sleeping on a trodden road..
Knew now,
Now only,
The blessing to have a home,
Even if it were
A hole in the door!

«- من الطارق؟
- أنا محمود .»
دائما يعترفون ..
أولئك المتهمون بضربه!
-‘Who’s knocking?’
-It’s me: Mahmoud.’
They always admit:
Those accused of giving him a beating

ليس لها بيوت
ولا أهل.
كل يوم تقيم
بين أشخاص جدد..
أبواب الفنادق!

لم يأت النجار لتركيبه.
كلاهما، اليوم،
عاطل عن العمل!
The carpenter did not come to install him.

Are unemployed!

- أحيانا يخرجون ضاحكين،
وأحيانا.. مبللين بالدموع،
وأحيانا.. متذمرين.
ماذا يفعلون بهم هناك؟!
تتساءل
أبواب السينما.
‘Sometimes they come out laughing,
Sometimes... wet with tears,
And sometimes.. complaining.
What are they doing to them there?!’
They wonder,
The cinema doors.

سددوا إلى وجهه ثلاث لكمات..
لكنهم لم يخلعوا كتفه.
شرطة طيبون!
"knock...knock...knock"
They punched him three times in the face,

اختاره الرجل من دون جميع أصحابه.
حمله على ظهره بكل حنان وحذر.
أركبه سيارة.
«منتهى العز».. قال لنفسه.
وأمام البيت
صاح الرجل: افتحوا..
جئنا بباب جديد
لدورة المياه!

Although small and slender,
The man chose him without all his companions.
He carried him on his back carefully with tender,
Got him a car.
He said to himself: “Ultimate glory”.
And in front of the house
The man shouted: Open..
We brought a new door
For the lavatory!

- نحن لا نأتي بسهولة.
فلكي نولد،
تخضع أمهاتنا، دائما،
للعمليات القيصرية.
يقول الباب الخشبي،
وفي عروقه تتصاعد رائحة المنشار.
- رفات المئات من أسلافي..
المئات.
صهرت في الجحيم..
في الجحيم.
لكي أولد أنا فقط.
يقول الباب الفولاذي!
‘We don t come easy.
To be born,
Our mothers are always subjected,
To cesarean sections’,
The wooden door says,
And the smell of the saw rises in his veins.
‘The remains of hundreds of my ancestors…
Hundreds..
Are melted in hell..
In Hell.
Just to give birth to me.’
The steel door says!

- حسنا..
هو غاضب من زوجته.
لماذا يصفقني أنا؟!
‘Well..
He is angry with his wife.
Why is it me that he slaps?!’

لولا ساعي البريد
لمات من الجوع.
كل صباح
يمد يده إلى فمه
ويطعمه رسائل!
If it weren t for the postman,
He would’ve starved.
Every morning
He extends his hand to his mouth,
And feeds him with letters!

«إنها الجنة..
طعام وافر،
وشراب،
وضياء،
ومناخ أوروبي.»
يشعر بمنتهى الغبطة
باب الثلاجة!
"It s paradise...
Bountiful food,
And drinks,
And light,
A European climate.”
He feels endlessly jubilant:
The refrigerator door!

- لا أمنع الهواء ولا النور
ولا أحجب الأنظار.
أنا مؤمن بالديمقراطية.
- لكنك تقمع الهوام.
- تلك هي الديمقراطية!
يقول باب الشبك.

‘I don t block air, nor light;
I don t screen eyesight;
I believe in democracy.’
- ‘But you suppress the flies’.
- ‘That s what it is: democracy!’
The net door says.
